Uga Riva

Negombo, Sri Lanka
★★★★★

Uga Riva is a seven-room boutique hotel in a restored 180-year-old colonial manor at Thoppuwa, north of Negombo, about half an hour from the airport. Set in a five-acre (two-hectare) coconut garden and once home to prominent Sri Lankan families and now restored and extended by Uga Escapes, the white villa with its carved gables, arched portico and terracotta roofs keeps its heritage character, and the hotel says Mahatma Gandhi was among its past guests.

Which room should I book?

All seven rooms have air conditioning and a ceiling fan, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, a flat-screen television, a safe, an espresso machine with Sri Lankan tea and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

  • Deluxe Room – three rooms of about 39 square metres in the restored manor, with either a king-size or a queen-size bed and views of the tropical garden. Up to three adults can share.
  • Superior Room – three rooms of about 43 square metres with a traditional four-poster king-size bed, a sitting area, outdoor space for lounging and dining, and a walk-in rain shower. Up to three adults can share.
  • Premier Suite – the hotel's only suite, more than 87 square metres, with a living area, a separate bedroom with a king-size bed and a furnished veranda for private dining that looks across a secluded part of the garden. The hotel suggests it for honeymooners and for families who want extra space. Up to three adults can share.

With only seven rooms in total, a family or group can take several and have most of the house to themselves.

What is the food like?

The kitchen serves fusion menus that mix local and international cooking, and you can eat in the main dining room, out in the garden or in your room. Guests can also join a Sri Lankan cookery masterclass.

What is there to do at Uga Riva?

The temperature-controlled pool sits in the landscaped garden beside an open-sided pavilion bar, and the hotel offers guided walks through the garden. The hotel arranges tuk-tuk tours of Negombo and boat rides, and offers laundry, a taxi service and a doctor on call.

What is nearby?

The hotel is a short drive from the sea: Negombo Beach is about 6 kilometres away, and the colonial-era Hamilton Canal about 5 kilometres. In Negombo itself you can visit the fish market, about 9 kilometres away, the old Dutch Fort and St Sebastian's Church, and take a boat out on the Negombo Lagoon. The nearest railway station is Kochchikade on the Puttalam Line, about 2 kilometres away in a straight line.

How do I get from the airport to Uga Riva?

Bandaranaike International Airport is about 30 minutes away by road, and Colombo is 45 minutes to an hour away, which makes Uga Riva a calm first or last night in Sri Lanka. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Uga Riva, which takes you to the door.

Who is Uga Riva best suited to?

It suits couples and small families who want somewhere quiet and characterful near the airport rather than a big beach hotel, at the start or end of a trip. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Negombo.
