A Sinhala-language work built around the life of Mahapajapati Gotami, the great arahant through whom the door to the bhikkhuni order was opened. It is written by Sriya Ratnakara and published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co.
Mahapajapati Gotami holds a particular place in Buddhist tradition as the first woman to be ordained, and her story is told and retold in Sri Lanka in sermon, verse and prose. This book takes her character as its subject and treats her life as a narrative.
Please note that the text is entirely in Sinhala. There is no English translation within the book, so it will suit readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala prose — Sri Lankan readers at home and abroad, members of Sinhala-speaking households overseas who want Buddhist reading material for the family shelf, and students of the language with enough command to follow a sustained narrative. Readers without Sinhala will not be able to use it.
