A picture book for young readers from Sybil Wettasinghe, one of a recent series of children's stories she produced in English. It is set in large type across a short extent, the kind of book a child at primary school can manage alone or with a little help, and the pages carry colour illustrations of the sort that holds a young reader's attention.
Wettasinghe is a Sri Lankan author and illustrator of children's books, working in both Sinhala and English, and her drawings are a familiar part of childhood reading on the island. The combination of her own words and her own pictures is what gives these small books their character: the illustration is not decoration added later but part of how the story is told.
It suits a child beginning to read independently, and it travels well as a gift — a Sri Lankan children's book in English, published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., for readers abroad who want their children to meet Wettasinghe's work in the language they read in. Parents and teachers building a shelf of Sri Lankan picture books for young children will know the name.
