Charles Dickens's novel follows a boy born to a poor woman in a workhouse, a place run with the harshness of a jail. Oliver is left with nothing but his own ambition and perseverance, and the story carries him through hardship to a happy ending. It is one of the English novels most often met first in childhood and returned to later, and it has stayed in print since Dickens's own century.
This English-language edition comes from M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a long-established Colombo publisher and bookseller whose list is familiar to Sri Lankan readers and schools. Editions of this kind are bought as much for the classroom and the home shelf as for the pleasure of reading, and a Sri Lankan imprint of a standard English text is a practical way to own one.
It will suit a reader coming to Dickens for the first time, a parent or teacher putting a well-known story into a young reader's hands, or anyone building a shelf of English classics in editions published locally rather than abroad.
