A Sinhala-language collection of stories drawn from Sri Lanka's past, written by Padmini Perera. The whole book is in Sinhala, with no English text, so it will suit readers who are comfortable in the language or families teaching it at home.
The material is historical rather than fictional in origin. Perera draws on the achievements and skills of earlier generations, the valour and power of the island's kings, and the work of its artists and writers, and retells these as stories. The publisher presents the book as an attempt to open the past to the present generation of children — history offered in narrative form rather than as a chronicle or a school text.
It is published by M. D. Gunasena & Co. (Pvt) Ltd, a Colombo house publishing in Sinhala and English.
Likely to interest Sinhala-reading households abroad looking for storytelling that keeps children connected to the island's history, as well as adult readers who enjoy popular retellings of the historical record.
