Tula and Meena Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan marriage matching reads a pairing of Tula (Libra) and Meena (Pisces), in both the Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham traditions. Here the rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes. The rashi-level items are only part of the picture, because the two birth stars carry the most weight.

What does the rashi count mean for Tula and Meena?

Counting from the bride's moon sign to the groom's gives a number that both traditions read. When the bride is Tula and the groom is Meena, the count is 6. In the reverse, with a Meena bride and a Tula groom, the count is 8. This six-and-eight relationship is treated carefully in matching.

In the Sinhala porondam, rashi is not obtained for a Tula bride with a Meena groom, and partly obtained for a Meena bride with a Tula groom. In the Tamil porutham, rasi is not obtained in either direction. So the direction of the pairing makes a small difference in the Sinhala reading, but not in the Tamil one.

Are the rashi lords of Tula and Meena friends?

Each moon sign has a ruling planet. Tula is ruled by Venus and Meena by Jupiter. In the traditional scheme of planetary relationships, these two lords are not mutual friends: their relationship is described as neutral and hostile, meaning one regards the other as neutral while the other does not regard it kindly.

Because of this, the rashi lord item is not obtained in both directions, in both systems. It appears as rashyadhipathi in the Sinhala porondam and rasi adhipathi in the Tamil porutham. This result is the same whichever partner holds which sign, since it depends only on the two ruling planets and how they relate to each other.

How does vashya work for this pair?

Vashya, called vasya in the Tamil tradition, looks at whether one moon sign is traditionally drawn to or in harmony with the other. Certain signs are grouped as having this kind of natural attraction, and a match obtains the item when the two signs fall into such a relationship.

For Tula and Meena, vashya is not obtained in both directions and in both systems. This is a rashi-level item, and like the rashi count and the rashi lords, it is shared by every couple with this pair of moon signs. It tells you something about the signs in general, but it does not settle anything about a particular couple on its own.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each moon sign spans several birth stars (nakshatra), and each star is divided into quarters. Between Tula and Meena there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations in each direction, and outcomes differ widely across them.

In both directions, none of the 81 combinations reaches 8 out of 10 in the Tamil porutham, around 75 per cent are weak in the Tamil reading, and around 4 per cent show a Tamil rajju clash. The Sinhala porondam reads very differently: leaving aside the weekday factor, 90 per cent pass with a Tula bride and a Meena groom, and 100 per cent pass the other way round.
