Tula and Makara Porondam

This page explains how Sri Lankan marriage matching treats a pairing of Tula (Libra) and Makara (Capricorn), in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham. The rashi results here are only a starting point, because the full match depends on each person's birth star.

Which rashi is being compared here?

In Sri Lankan matching, the rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac, not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes. Your moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth, so it can easily differ from the Western star sign you know.

Tula is ruled by Venus and Makara by Saturn. Both traditions look at three rashi-level items for this pair: the rashi count between the two signs, the relationship between the two rashi lords, and vashya. Each item can be obtained, partly obtained or not obtained, and the results change depending on which partner is the bride and which is the groom.

What happens when the bride is Tula and the groom is Makara?

Counting from the bride's sign, Makara is the 4th sign from Tula. In Sinhala porondam the rashi item is partly obtained for this count, while in Tamil porutham the rasi item is not obtained.

The rashi lords, Venus and Saturn, are mutual friends, so rashyadhipathi (Sinhala) and rasi adhipathi (Tamil) are both obtained. Vashya, which looks at natural affinity between the signs, is also obtained in both traditions.

So in this direction two of the three rashi items are fully obtained, with the rashi count giving a mixed reading between the two systems.

What happens when the bride is Makara and the groom is Tula?

Counting from the bride's sign, Tula is the 10th sign from Makara. Here the rashi item is obtained in both Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham.

The rashi lords are the same pair, Saturn and Venus, and as mutual friends they give an obtained result for rashyadhipathi and rasi adhipathi in both traditions.

Vashya, however, is not obtained in this direction, in both systems. This shows clearly why direction matters: the same two signs give a different pattern when the bride's and groom's positions are swapped. Even so, these are only three items among many, and none of them settles the match on its own.

Why do the birth stars matter more than the rashis?

Each rashi spans parts of several nakshatras, and the calculator works at the level of star quarters, giving 81 possible combinations for any pair of rashis. Outcomes across these vary a great deal.

With a Tula bride and Makara groom, about 27% of combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham; with a Makara bride and Tula groom, about 15% do. In both directions about 23% are weak in Tamil porutham and about 5% show a rajju clash. Every combination passes the Sinhala porondam threshold when the weekday factor is set aside.

These figures show that two couples with the same rashis can receive quite different results, so full birth details are essential.
