Tula and Dhanu Porondam

When a Tula (Libra) and a Dhanu (Sagittarius) horoscope come together, families usually want to know how the two signs sit in porondam and porutham. This page explains the sign-level results in both directions, the bride in Tula or the bride in Dhanu, and shows why the two birth stars matter far more than the signs alone.

Which Tula and Dhanu are we talking about?

In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi): the sign the Moon occupied at birth, worked out in the sidereal zodiac used by Sri Lankan astrologers. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so someone who reads as Libra in a magazine may not have a Tula moon sign at all.

Once both moon signs are known, a few porondam and porutham items can be read from the signs alone: the rashi count, the relationship between the two rashi lords, and vashya. These are only the first layer. Most items depend on the birth star (nakshatra) of each person, which is why sign-level results are a starting point rather than a verdict.

How does it work when the bride is Tula and the groom is Dhanu?

Counting from the bride's sign, Dhanu is the 3rd sign from Tula. In Sinhala porondam, rashi porondam is partly obtained for this count, while in Tamil porutham the rasi item is not obtained.

The rashi lords are Venus for Tula and Jupiter for Dhanu. Their relationship is mixed rather than friendly: one regards the other as neutral and the other regards it as hostile. Because the lords are not mutual friends, rashyadhipathi porondam and rasi adhipathi porutham are both not obtained. Vashya is also not obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems for this pairing.

What changes when the bride is Dhanu and the groom is Tula?

Reversing the roles changes the count. Counting from a Dhanu bride, Tula is the 11th sign, and this count is favoured in both traditions: rashi porondam and rasi porutham are both obtained.

The rashi lords do not change, of course. Jupiter and Venus still have the same mixed relationship, neutral in one direction and hostile in the other, so rashyadhipathi and rasi adhipathi remain not obtained. Vashya is likewise not obtained in both systems. So the sign-level picture is somewhat stronger with the bride in Dhanu, mainly because of the rashi count, but it is still only part of the full reading.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each moon sign spans parts of several nakshatras, and the calculator works with star quarters. For each direction there are 81 possible star-quarter combinations, and the outcomes vary widely across them.

With a Tula bride and a Dhanu groom, about 68% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday item), while about 85% come out weak in Tamil porutham. With a Dhanu bride and a Tula groom, about 96% pass Sinhala porondam and only about 6% are weak in Tamil. In neither direction does any combination reach 8 of 10 porutham, and none shows a Tamil rajju clash. Only your actual stars tell you where you fall.
