Question 1

What is Trigonella foenum-graecum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, fenugreek seeds are used primarily to support digestion, regulate blood sugar levels, encourage milk production in nursing mothers, and reduce inflammation. They are prepared as decoctions, soaked seeds, powders, and compound herbal formulas depending on the condition being addressed.

Question 2

What is fenugreek called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Fenugreek is known as Uluhal in Sinhala. In Tamil, used widely in Sri Lanka's northern and eastern regions, it is called Vendhayam. Both names refer to the same plant, Trigonella foenum-graecum.

Question 3

Is fenugreek native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Fenugreek is not native to Sri Lanka but has been cultivated on the island for centuries as part of its Ayurvedic and culinary traditions. It is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean and Near East regions and spread through trade routes to South Asia.

Question 4

Can fenugreek help with blood sugar control?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurvedic practice has long used fenugreek seeds to help manage blood glucose, and modern research has explored this effect, attributing it partly to the soluble fibre galactomannan found in the seeds. However, individuals managing diabetes or related conditions should consult a qualified practitioner before incorporating fenugreek therapeutically, as it may interact with medications.

Question 5

How do you prepare fenugreek seeds for medicinal use?

Accepted Answer

The most common preparations include soaking seeds overnight in water and drinking the liquid on an empty stomach, boiling seeds into a decoction, or grinding dried seeds into a powder to blend with other herbs. The appropriate preparation depends on the intended use and is best determined by a licensed Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Ayurvedic plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains records of the island's medicinal plant catalogue and supports licensed Ayurvedic hospitals and practitioners nationwide. Visitors can also explore dedicated Ayurvedic wellness centres and botanical gardens that feature medicinal plant collections, particularly in the Central and Southern provinces.

Question 7

Are there any side effects of using fenugreek?

Accepted Answer

Fenugreek is generally considered safe when used in culinary amounts. In higher therapeutic doses, some individuals may experience digestive discomfort, and the seeds have been noted to interact with anticoagulant and antidiabetic medications. Pregnant individuals are typically advised to avoid large medicinal doses due to potential uterine-stimulating effects.
