Question 1

What does "machan" mean in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

"Machan" is an informal term of address used among close friends, roughly equivalent to "mate" or "bro" in English. It is used by both men and women in casual conversation, particularly among younger Sri Lankans, and signals familiarity and warmth between the speakers.

Question 2

What does "aiyo" mean in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

"Aiyo" is a versatile exclamation used to express surprise, distress, sympathy, or mild frustration. It is shared across Sinhala and Tamil speakers and is one of the most recognisable words in Sri Lankan everyday speech. You will hear it in response to anything from spilled coffee to a poor cricket score.

Question 3

How do you say "thank you" informally in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

The standard word for thank you is "istuti" (ඉස්තුති). For a fuller expression, "bohoma istuti" means "thank you very much". In very casual settings among friends, a simple nod or "hondai" (good, fine) can also acknowledge a favour.

Question 4

What is the difference between literary Sinhala and spoken Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Literary or formal Sinhala (sädhu bhäsha) is used in writing, official communications, and religious contexts. Spoken colloquial Sinhala drops many grammatical endings, borrows words from English, Portuguese, Dutch, and Tamil, and is the language you will actually hear on the street. Most slang belongs entirely to the spoken register.

Question 5

What does "patta" mean in Sinhala slang?

Accepted Answer

"Patta" is a widely used positive adjective meaning excellent, first-rate, or really good. It can be applied to food, experiences, people, or almost anything else — "patta kottu" means "really good kottu roti", for example. It is one of the most versatile compliments in everyday Sinhala.

Question 6

Is it common to mix English with Sinhala in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, code-switching between Sinhala and English is completely normal, especially in urban areas and among younger generations. English nouns and verbs are regularly embedded in Sinhala grammatical structures, producing natural-sounding hybrid sentences. This reflects Sri Lanka's multilingual history rather than linguistic confusion.

Question 7

What does "hora" mean in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

"Hora" literally means thief or stolen, but in colloquial use it has broadened to mean anything done secretly or unofficially. A "hora deal" is an under-the-table arrangement, and a "hora bus" is an unlicensed or informal bus service. Context usually makes the meaning clear.

Question 8

Do different parts of Sri Lanka have different Sinhala dialects?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Colombo dialect is the media standard, but the Southern dialect spoken around Galle and Matara is distinct enough that other Sri Lankans sometimes struggle to follow it. Up-country varieties near the central highlands show heavier Tamil influence. Travellers who spend time across multiple regions will notice these differences.
