Simha and Vrischika Porondam

This page explains how Simha (Leo) and Vrischika (Scorpio) are read in Sri Lankan marriage matching: porondam in the Sinhala tradition and porutham in the Tamil tradition. The rashi here is the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign printed in newspapers. Rashi-level results are only a starting point. The two birth stars carry the real weight.

What does the rashi count mean for Simha and Vrischika?

The rashi count is taken from the bride's moon sign to the groom's, so the result depends on which partner holds which sign.

When the bride is Simha and the groom is Vrischika, the count is 4. In the Sinhala reckoning the rashi porondam is partly obtained. In the Tamil reckoning the rasi porutham is not obtained.

When the bride is Vrischika and the groom is Simha, the count is 10. Here the rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems. The same pair of signs can therefore read quite differently depending on the direction, so it matters to set the bride and groom correctly.

Are the rashi lords friendly, and what about vashya?

Simha is ruled by the Sun and Vrischika by Mars. Traditional astrology treats these two planets as mutual friends. Because of this, the rashi lord item (rashyadhipathi in Sinhala, rasi adhipathi in Tamil) is obtained in both directions and in both systems.

Vashya, sometimes called vasya, looks at whether one sign is traditionally drawn to or influenced by the other. For this pairing vashya is not obtained in either direction, in both the Sinhala and Tamil methods.

Vashya is one item among many. On its own it does not settle whether a match is suitable.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Most of the matching items come from the two birth stars (nakshatra) and their quarters, not from the rashi. Each sign pairing allows 81 star-quarter combinations, and their results vary widely.

With a Simha bride and Vrischika groom, about 54% of combinations pass the Sinhala porondam (leaving aside the weekday item). None reach 8 of 10 Tamil poruthams, and about 11% fall in the weaker Tamil range.

With a Vrischika bride and Simha groom, all combinations pass the Sinhala porondam on the same basis. About 44% reach 8 of 10 poruthams, and only about 1% fall in the weaker range.

In both directions, none of the combinations shows a Tamil rajju clash.

How should families use these results?

Treat the rashi results above as background only. Two people with these same moon signs can have very different outcomes once their actual birth stars are known.

For a meaningful reading, use the calculator with full birth details for both people: date, exact time and place of birth. These details fix the moon sign, the nakshatra and its quarter, and they produce the complete porondam or porutham table.

When a marriage decision is involved, it is wise to discuss the full chart with a family astrologer. An astrologer can consider the whole horoscope and family custom alongside the matching score.
