What is Plumeria obtusa used for medicinally?

Plumeria obtusa is catalogued as an Ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. Traditional applications include topical use of the latex for skin conditions and bark preparations for inflammation and digestive complaints. Active compounds such as iridoids and flavonoids have been identified in the genus, though therapeutic use should always be guided by a qualified practitioner.

What is the difference between Plumeria obtusa and Plumeria alba?

Plumeria obtusa is evergreen with blunt-tipped leaves, while Plumeria alba is deciduous and has more elongated, pointed leaves. Both produce white flowers with a yellow centre, but P. alba generally yields a higher volume of aromatic compounds and is the species more commonly used for essential oil extraction. In Sri Lanka both are cultivated as ornamentals.

Why is Plumeria obtusa called the Singapore Graveyard Flower?

The common name reflects the widespread practice across Southeast and South Asia of planting frangipani species around cemeteries and memorial grounds, where the persistent sweet fragrance is considered respectful and auspicious. The "Singapore" prefix distinguishes this evergreen species from the deciduous frangipani more commonly planted elsewhere. Despite the association, the tree is also widely grown in gardens, temple courtyards, and parks.

Does Plumeria obtusa grow in Sri Lanka?

Yes, Plumeria obtusa is naturalised across Sri Lanka, particularly in the dry and intermediate climatic zones. It is found in home gardens, Buddhist and Hindu temple grounds, and along roadsides. The species tolerates drought well and is suited to low and mid-elevation areas throughout the island.

What does Plumeria obtusa smell like?

The flowers carry a soft, creamy floral fragrance with faintly powdery and fruity undertones — generally lighter than the more intense scent of Plumeria rubra varieties. The fragrance is strongest in early morning and evening. It is commonly associated with relaxation and is used as a basis for natural perfumes and aromatherapy products.

Is Plumeria obtusa toxic?

The milky latex in the stems and leaves can cause mild skin or eye irritation, particularly in people with sensitive skin. The plant is considered mildly toxic if plant material is ingested in quantity, so it should be kept out of reach of young children and pets. Under normal ornamental garden conditions and careful handling, it presents no significant hazard.

How is frangipani used in Sri Lankan culture?

In Sri Lanka, frangipani flowers are gathered as temple offerings and woven into garlands for religious ceremonies in both Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The tree's year-round flowering and persistent scent have made it a fixture in sacred and memorial spaces for centuries. Dried and fresh flowers are also used in Ayurvedic preparations and natural wellness products inspired by traditional botanical knowledge.
