Question 1

What is Plumbago auriculata used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, the root of Plumbago auriculata is used in preparations associated with digestive support and certain skin conditions. It is generally administered in carefully measured doses within compound formulations rather than as a standalone remedy, because its key compound, plumbagin, can be toxic in excess. Consulting a registered Ayurvedic physician before use is strongly advised.

Question 2

What is the difference between Plumbago auriculata and Plumbago zeylanica?

Accepted Answer

The most visible difference is flower colour: Plumbago auriculata produces pale blue to sky-blue flowers, while Plumbago zeylanica produces white flowers. Both belong to the Plumbaginaceae family and share the bioactive compound plumbagin, but P. zeylanica is more extensively documented in classical Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic texts. The species name 'zeylanica' is a Latinised reference to Ceylon, reflecting its close historical association with the island.

Question 3

Is Plumbago auriculata native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Plumbago auriculata is native to South Africa. It has been introduced to and naturalised across tropical and subtropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it is now common in home gardens and roadsides. The related Plumbago zeylanica is native to South Asia and more directly indigenous to the Sri Lankan flora.

Question 4

What does the Plumbago auriculata plant look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a semi-climbing or spreading shrub growing up to three metres or more when supported. The leaves are soft grey-green and oval-shaped. The flowers grow in terminal clusters and are pale blue to lavender, each with five petals forming a slender tube. The green calyxes are covered in sticky glands that help the plant disperse its seeds.

Question 5

What is plumbagin and is it safe?

Accepted Answer

Plumbagin is a naphthoquinone compound found in the roots of Plumbago species. It has attracted research interest for various biological properties, but it is also cytotoxic — meaning it can damage cells — at higher concentrations. Pre-clinical laboratory findings are promising in some areas, but these do not yet amount to proven human therapies. Self-medicating with raw plant material carries real health risks.

Question 6

Where can I see Ayurvedic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy has labelled collections of Sri Lankan medicinal plants and is a good starting point. Many Ayurvedic wellness resorts, particularly in the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces, also offer guided introductions to medicinal species in active use. Herb gardens attached to traditional Ayurvedic hospitals are another option for deeper engagement with the pharmacopoeia.

Question 7

Can Plumbago auriculata be grown as a garden plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is widely cultivated as an ornamental shrub across Sri Lanka. It flowers almost continuously in warm conditions and works well as a hedge or trellis plant. It grows best with full sun and well-drained soil, and periodic pruning helps maintain shape and encourages fresh blooming. Avoid ingesting any part of the root, and keep the plant trimmed to prevent excessive spreading near natural vegetation.
