Question 1

What is Paspalum scrobiculatum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, Paspalum scrobiculatum is used primarily for its cooling, anti-inflammatory, and mild diuretic properties. Preparations from the plant have been applied to fever, digestive complaints, skin irritations, and wound care. Any use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Is Paspalum scrobiculatum the same as Kodo millet?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Paspalum scrobiculatum is the same species as Kodo millet, a minor cereal grain cultivated in parts of India and Nepal. While it is used as a food grain in those regions, in Sri Lanka it is better known within the Ayurvedic medicinal plant tradition rather than as a food crop.

Question 3

Where does Paspalum scrobiculatum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is widespread across Sri Lanka's wet, intermediate, and dry zones. It commonly grows along paddy field margins, roadsides, canal banks, and in moist disturbed ground. Its abundance as an agricultural weed has historically made it accessible to traditional herbalists.

Question 4

Is Paspalum scrobiculatum a recognised medicinal plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It is formally listed in Sri Lanka's catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, which is maintained under the country's government-recognised Ayurvedic medicine system. This gives it official standing as a plant of therapeutic relevance within traditional Sri Lankan healthcare.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Paspalum scrobiculatum?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary laboratory research has investigated the plant's phytochemical content and found evidence of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. However, large-scale human clinical trials are limited, and findings remain at an early stage. Scientific validation of traditional uses is ongoing.

Question 6

Is Paspalum scrobiculatum safe to use?

Accepted Answer

As with all medicinal plants, safety depends on correct preparation, dosage, and individual health circumstances. It should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic or healthcare practitioner. Self-medication with any herbal preparation carries risks if not properly supervised.

Question 7

Can I see Ayurvedic medicinal plants when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka has several Ayurvedic herbal gardens, rural herb farms, and government Ayurvedic hospitals where visitors can learn about the island's medicinal plant traditions. Some wellness resorts also offer guided tours of their medicinal gardens as part of Ayurvedic treatment programmes.
