Mesha and Meena Porondam

This page explains how Mesha (Aries) and Meena (Pisces) are read in Sri Lankan porondam (Sinhala) and porutham (Tamil) marriage matching. Here the rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi) in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka, not the sun sign printed in newspapers. The sign-level results differ depending on which partner holds which sign, so both directions are covered.

What does the rashi count mean for Mesha and Meena?

The rashi count is taken from the bride's moon sign to the groom's. Because these two signs sit side by side in the zodiac, the count changes sharply with direction.

When the bride is Mesha and the groom is Meena, the count is 12. In the Sinhala reading, rashi porondam is partly obtained, while in the Tamil reading, rasi porutham is obtained.

When the bride is Meena and the groom is Mesha, the count is 2. Here rashi is not obtained in either the Sinhala or the Tamil reading.

This is a good example of why the bride and groom positions are never simply swapped. The same two signs can give different results depending on who holds which.

Are the rashi lords of Mesha and Meena friends?

Mesha is ruled by Mars and Meena by Jupiter. In the traditional planetary relationships used for matching, Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends, each regarding the other favourably.

Because friendship runs both ways, the direction makes no difference to this item. Rashyadhipathi porondam in the Sinhala reading and rasi adhipathi porutham in the Tamil reading are both obtained, whether the bride is Mesha and the groom Meena or the other way round.

Many families look closely at this item, since it reflects the harmony between the ruling planets of the two moon signs. For this pair it is a steady, consistent point on both sides.

How does vashya work for this pair?

Vashya (vasya in Tamil) looks at whether one moon sign is traditionally considered to be drawn towards, or influenced by, the other. It follows a fixed table of sign groupings rather than the planetary friendships described above.

For Mesha and Meena, vashya is not obtained in either direction, and this holds in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil porutham readings.

It is worth keeping this in proportion. Vashya is one item among several, and no single sign-level item settles a match on its own. Astrologers weigh it alongside the rashi count, the lord friendship and, above all, the star-based items that come from each person's nakshatra.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each moon sign holds parts of three nakshatras, and each nakshatra quarter (pada) is treated separately. For any pair of signs this gives 81 star-quarter combinations, and most porondam and porutham items depend on these stars, not the sign.

With a Mesha bride and Meena groom, 64 per cent of combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham, 5 per cent are rated weak on the Tamil scale, and 41 per cent pass Sinhala porondam (weekday excluded).

With a Meena bride and Mesha groom, none reach 8 of 10 porutham and 51 per cent are rated weak on the Tamil scale, yet 44 per cent pass Sinhala porondam.

In neither direction does any combination show a Tamil rajju clash.
