Question 1

How far is Kumarakanda Railway Station from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Kumarakanda is 99.6 km from Colombo Fort along the Coast Line. The rail journey typically takes around two to three hours depending on the service — express trains are faster, while stopping services take longer but pass more intermediate halts.

Question 2

Which stations are next to Kumarakanda on the Coast Line?

Accepted Answer

Thiranagama is the neighbouring station towards Colombo, and Dodanduwa is the next station in the direction of Matara. Both are minor coastal halts close to beach and lagoon areas in the Galle District.

Question 3

How many trains stop at Kumarakanda per day?

Accepted Answer

Around 14 trains call at Kumarakanda on a typical day, running in both directions between Colombo Fort and Matara. The exact schedule varies by day, so checking the Sri Lanka Railways timetable before travel is advisable.

Question 4

Is Kumarakanda a good base for visiting Galle Fort?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Galle Fort is within easy reach by train — under 20 minutes from Kumarakanda. The station provides convenient access without the higher accommodation costs often found closer to Galle town centre.

Question 5

Can I buy train tickets at Kumarakanda Station?

Accepted Answer

Kumarakanda is a small halt and may not have full ticketing facilities. It is safer to purchase tickets at a staffed station such as Hikkaduwa, Galle, or Colombo Fort before boarding.

Question 6

What is the Coast Line railway in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Coast Line is the rail route running south from Colombo Fort along the Indian Ocean coastline to Matara. It passes through major stops including Kalutara, Aluthgama, Hikkaduwa, and Galle, serving both commuters and tourists travelling the western and southern coast.

Question 7

Is it better to travel the southern coast by train or by road?

Accepted Answer

Both are viable, but the train offers a more relaxed and often faster journey than driving the A2 coastal highway, which can experience heavy traffic especially during peak season and public holidays. The rail route also passes close to the shoreline in several places, offering views not accessible by road.
