Question 1

Who was King Pandukabhaya of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

King Pandukabhaya was the first monarch of a unified Sri Lanka, ruling from around 437 to 367 BCE. He founded Anuradhapura as the royal capital and established an organised city with distinct quarters for different communities. His reign is recorded primarily in the Pali chronicle known as the Mahavamsa.

Question 2

When did King Pandukabhaya rule Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

According to the Mahavamsa, Pandukabhaya came to the throne around 437 BCE and ruled for approximately seventy years. These dates are traditional and derived from the chronicle rather than independently verified inscriptions, so they are treated as approximate by modern historians.

Question 3

What is King Pandukabhaya famous for?

Accepted Answer

He is best known for founding and planning the city of Anuradhapura, which became Sri Lanka's capital for nearly 1,400 years. He is also credited with constructing the Basawakkulama tank, one of the earliest irrigation reservoirs on the island, and for tolerating diverse religious communities within his kingdom.

Question 4

Is King Pandukabhaya related to Prince Vijaya?

Accepted Answer

Yes. According to the Mahavamsa, Pandukabhaya was the grandson of King Panduvasudeva, who was himself a descendant of Prince Vijaya — the legendary founder of the Sinhalese people. This lineage gave Pandukabhaya a claim to royal legitimacy rooted in the island's founding mythology.

Question 5

Where is Pandukabhaya's capital city located?

Accepted Answer

Anuradhapura, the city he founded and made the royal capital, is located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing ruins of palaces, dagobas, and ancient tanks spanning many centuries of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.

Question 6

Was King Pandukabhaya a Buddhist king?

Accepted Answer

No. Buddhism is traditionally said to have arrived in Sri Lanka during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa, who was Pandukabhaya's great-grandson. Pandukabhaya pre-dated the island's conversion to Buddhism, though the Mahavamsa portrays him as ruling with a sense of duty and tolerance toward all religious groups.

Question 7

What primary source describes the life of King Pandukabhaya?

Accepted Answer

The Mahavamsa, a Pali-language chronicle compiled by Buddhist monks at the Mahavihara monastery in Anuradhapura, is the principal source. It dedicates several chapters to his birth, battles, and administrative achievements. Scholars use it alongside archaeological evidence to reconstruct early Sri Lankan history.

Question 8

Can I visit sites associated with King Pandukabhaya in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Basawakkulama tank in Anuradhapura is traditionally attributed to Pandukabhaya and remains visible today. The broader Anuradhapura Sacred City, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves the landscape of the capital he founded. Organised guided tours of the site are the most effective way to appreciate its full historical depth.
