Question 1

Where is Kandegoda Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

Kandegoda Railway Station is on the Coast Line in the Galle District, Southern Province of Sri Lanka. It lies 81.5 km from Colombo Fort by rail, between the stations of Andadola (towards Colombo) and Ambalangoda (towards Galle).

Question 2

How many trains stop at Kandegoda per day?

Accepted Answer

Around 16 trains typically call at Kandegoda on a normal operating day. The mix includes intercity expresses and slower stopping services. Not every train on the Coast Line halts here, so checking the current timetable before travel is advisable.

Question 3

How long does the train from Colombo to Kandegoda take?

Accepted Answer

Journey time from Colombo Fort to Kandegoda is roughly one and a half to two and a half hours depending on the service type. Intercity expresses make fewer stops and are faster; local stopping trains take longer but call at every station en route.

Question 4

What town is nearest to Kandegoda Station?

Accepted Answer

Ambalangoda is the closest notable town, one station south of Kandegoda. It is well known for traditional devil-dance mask carving and handloom weaving, and has accommodation, restaurants and access to the coast.

Question 5

Is there anything worth visiting near Kandegoda?

Accepted Answer

The Ambalangoda mask workshops and museum are a short distance away and make for a rewarding cultural stop. The Madu Ganga wetlands — a Ramsar-listed estuary with mangrove boat tours — are also accessible from this area. Galle's Dutch Fort is a straightforward onward journey by train.

Question 6

Do I need to book a train ticket in advance for the Coast Line?

Accepted Answer

Reserved seating in first and second class on express services can be booked in advance at main stations or through Sri Lanka Railways. Third-class travel is unreserved. At small halts like Kandegoda, tickets are typically purchased at the origin station or paid to the guard on board.

Question 7

Is the Coast Line train journey scenic between Colombo and Galle?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Coast Line is considered one of the most scenic rail routes in South Asia. The track passes close to the shoreline in several places, offering views of lagoons, beaches and coconut palms. The section around Kandegoda sits in a quieter coastal stretch that is less built-up than the areas closer to Colombo.
