Question 1

What is Hibiscus surattensis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, Hibiscus surattensis is used for its anti-inflammatory and cooling properties. The leaves and stems are applied externally in poultices for skin irritations, while the flowers and other plant parts appear in traditional formulations aimed at pacifying heat-related imbalances. These are traditional folk applications and should not substitute advice from a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Hibiscus surattensis the same as the common red hibiscus?

Accepted Answer

No. The common ornamental hibiscus seen in Sri Lankan gardens is typically Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Hibiscus surattensis is a different species — a scrambling, prickly-stemmed plant with yellow flowers that grows in wild or disturbed habitats rather than cultivated gardens. Both belong to the same genus but differ in appearance, ecology, and use.

Question 3

Where can I find Hibiscus surattensis growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows across lowland and mid-elevation zones, particularly along roadsides, agricultural margins, and secondary scrub habitats. It is more commonly encountered in the dry and intermediate zones following monsoon rains, though it can persist year-round in wetter areas of the island.

Question 4

Can the flowers or leaves of Hibiscus surattensis be eaten?

Accepted Answer

In parts of South and Southeast Asia, the young leaves and flowers of H. surattensis are used as a mild souring agent in cooking, similar in principle to sorrel or tamarind. This culinary use is documented in ethnobotanical records, though it is not a mainstream Sri Lankan culinary tradition today.

Question 5

How does Hibiscus surattensis differ from Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle)?

Accepted Answer

Hibiscus sabdariffa, or roselle, is the species behind most commercial hibiscus teas and the tart red drinks sold globally. Its fleshy calyces are harvested and dried for that purpose. H. surattensis, by contrast, has yellow flowers and is used primarily in traditional Ayurvedic medicine rather than as a food or beverage crop.

Question 6

Are there Sri Lankan products made with hibiscus I can buy online?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A range of hibiscus-related products from Sri Lanka are available through Lakpura, including hibiscus flower teas, herbal blends combining hibiscus with moringa or rosehip, Ayurvedic soaps, and live hibiscus plants. These are made primarily from Hibiscus sabdariffa or Hibiscus rosa-sinensis rather than H. surattensis specifically.

Question 7

Is Hibiscus surattensis native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to tropical Asia broadly, including the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. It is also found in parts of Africa and the Pacific, where it is thought to have spread in association with human activity over centuries. Within Sri Lanka, it is considered a naturalised part of the lowland flora.

Question 8

What is the Sinhala name for Hibiscus surattensis?

Accepted Answer

The plant is sometimes referred to locally within the broader category of wada-mal (wild hibiscus) in Sinhala, though precise vernacular naming can vary by region. Botanical references and Ayurvedic texts may use Sanskrit-derived nomenclature alongside regional names.
