Question 1

What is Gyrinops walla used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Gyrinops walla has been used in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, with different parts of the tree — bark, leaves, and wood — applied in remedies traditionally associated with digestive health and skin conditions. Its inclusion in the local Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia reflects centuries of documented use by traditional physicians. Formal clinical research on its efficacy is still at an early stage.

Question 2

Is Gyrinops walla the same as agarwood?

Accepted Answer

Gyrinops walla belongs to the same plant family (Thymelaeaceae) as the Aquilaria species that typically produce agarwood resin. Like Aquilaria, Gyrinops trees can develop resinous heartwood under certain conditions, which is of interest to the oud and fragrance industry. However, Gyrinops walla is valued primarily as a medicinal plant in Sri Lanka rather than as a commercial agarwood source.

Question 3

Where can Gyrinops walla be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows naturally in Sri Lanka's wet-zone lowland and mid-elevation forests, mainly in the southwestern region. It is most likely to be encountered in intact forest habitats in districts such as Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, and Kalutara. Habitat loss has reduced its range, though some cultivation in home gardens has been reported.

Question 4

Is Gyrinops walla endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Gyrinops walla is Sri Lanka's only native representative of the Gyrinops genus, making it particularly significant from a biodiversity standpoint. While related Gyrinops species occur in parts of South and Southeast Asia, this specific species is considered endemic or near-endemic to the island.

Question 5

What does Gyrinops walla look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small to medium-sized tree with lance-shaped leaves, smooth grayish bark, and small cream-coloured flowers. The wood can develop a resinous quality under stress conditions, similar to other members of the Thymelaeaceae family. The tree tends to grow in shaded, humid forest understoreys.

Question 6

Is Gyrinops walla endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Gyrinops walla faces pressure from deforestation and habitat degradation in Sri Lanka's wet zone. It is included in national efforts to document and conserve native medicinal plants. Growing interest in its potential as an agarwood source has prompted some propagation, which may help maintain populations outside wild forest patches.

Question 7

Can tourists see Ayurvedic medicinal plants like Gyrinops walla in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Several herb gardens and Ayurvedic centres in the Kandy and Matale areas, as well as botanical gardens such as the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, display native medicinal plants with interpretive information. Specialized ethnobotany and nature tours can also be arranged through destination management companies like Lakpura, covering native forest species in their natural habitat.
