Question 1

What is Eriocaulon ceylanicum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Eriocaulon ceylanicum is catalogued in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant registry, indicating its recognised use within indigenous medical traditions. Aquatic herbs in Ayurveda are often associated with cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, though clinical studies on this specific species remain limited. Consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner for guidance on its therapeutic applications.

Question 2

Is Eriocaulon ceylanicum endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to Sri Lanka, with its botanical name directly referencing Ceylon, the island's former name. It belongs to the family Eriocaulaceae and is adapted to the freshwater wetland habitats found across Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. Its endemic or near-endemic status underscores the island's broader reputation as a global plant biodiversity hotspot.

Question 3

Where does Eriocaulon ceylanicum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This aquatic herb typically grows in shallow wetlands, paddy-field margins, seasonal pools, and the edges of slow-moving rivers and irrigation tanks. It favours waterlogged soils in the lowland and mid-elevation wet zone. Traditional rice-farming landscapes provide some of the most characteristic habitats for this species.

Question 4

What does Eriocaulon ceylanicum look like?

Accepted Answer

It produces compact rosettes of narrow, grass-like leaves and sends up slender scapes topped with small, button-shaped white flower heads — a distinctive feature of the Eriocaulon genus. The plant is small in stature, typically a few centimetres tall, and is most easily spotted growing in shallow standing water or very wet soil margins.

Question 5

How is Sri Lanka's list of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda under Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health administers the official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. Each catalogued species is assigned a unique identifier, and Eriocaulon ceylanicum holds the reference LK94006539 within this system. The catalogue supports both traditional medical practice and conservation policy for medicinally important native flora.

Question 6

Can tourists see medicinal plants like Eriocaulon ceylanicum in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Visitors interested in Sri Lanka's medicinal plant heritage can explore Ayurvedic herb gardens, botanical gardens such as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, and cultural heritage estates in the hill country region. Some rural home gardens and eco-lodges also maintain collections of traditional medicinal plants. Wetland habitats where aquatic species like this one grow can sometimes be seen on nature-focused tours.

Question 7

Are there conservation concerns for aquatic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Wetland habitats in Sri Lanka face pressure from agricultural expansion, drainage, and water pollution, which can affect specialist aquatic flora including species like Eriocaulon ceylanicum. Formal recognition within the Ayurvedic plant catalogue helps raise the conservation profile of such species. Sri Lanka's network of protected areas and botanical gardens plays an important role in preserving medicinally significant native plants.
