Question 1

What is Ceylon Silver Tips white tea?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon Silver Tips is the highest grade of Ceylon white tea, made exclusively from the unopened bud of the Camellia sinensis plant. The buds are covered in fine silvery-white hairs and are hand-plucked at a specific growth stage. The resulting liquor is very pale, delicately sweet, and low in caffeine relative to black tea.

Question 2

How much caffeine is in Ceylon white tea?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon white tea generally contains less caffeine per brewed cup than Ceylon black tea, making it a lighter option. However, the bud-only Silver Tips grade may contain more caffeine per gram of dry leaf than mature-leaf grades because buds are naturally caffeine-rich. A typical cup still delivers noticeably less caffeine than coffee.

Question 3

What temperature should I use to brew white tea?

Accepted Answer

Brew Ceylon white tea with water at around 75–80 °C — well below boiling. Boiling water scalds the delicate leaf and produces a bitter, flat cup. Steep for two to three minutes and taste before going longer. White tea should always be drunk without milk.

Question 4

Where in Sri Lanka is white tea produced?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon white tea comes almost entirely from high-elevation districts in the central hill country, particularly Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula, and Uva. These areas sit above roughly 1,200 metres, and the cool temperatures and misty conditions contribute significantly to the tea's flavour and aroma.

Question 5

Is Ceylon white tea good for you?

Accepted Answer

White tea retains a high level of polyphenols and catechins because it undergoes minimal processing, and some research links these compounds to antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits. The evidence is promising but still developing, so white tea is best enjoyed for its flavour rather than treated as a health supplement.

Question 6

What is the difference between white tea and green tea from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Both are minimally oxidised, but green tea is heat-fixed and rolled after plucking, giving it a slightly more vegetal, grassy flavour. White tea is only withered and dried, without heat-fixing or rolling, which produces a softer, more floral cup. Neither category should be confused with the island's dominant black tea.

Question 7

How do I know if Ceylon white tea is authentic?

Accepted Answer

Look for the Lion Logo certification issued by the Sri Lanka Tea Board on the packaging, which confirms the tea was grown and processed in Sri Lanka. A clearly stated estate name or region, and a harvest or packing date, are further signs of a reputable product. Avoid packs with vague origin claims.

Question 8

Can I buy Ceylon white tea as a gift from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ceylon white tea, especially Silver Tips presented in decorative caddies, is one of the most popular premium souvenirs from Sri Lanka. Quality options are available at estate boutiques in Nuwara Eliya, specialty tea shops in Colombo, and airport departure lounges. Gift caddies from brands like Dilmah are widely available and well-packaged for travel.
