Question 1

What is Celtis philippensis var. wightii used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

It is formally catalogued among Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plants, indicating recognition by traditional practitioners. Specific therapeutic applications are recorded in the national ayurvedic plant inventory, though detailed ethnobotanical uses in classical Sinhalese medical texts are not widely published in English. Research into the genus suggests potential bioactive compounds, but clinical evidence specific to this variety is limited.

Question 2

Where can Celtis philippensis var. wightii be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This variety is typically found in lowland dry and intermediate zone forests, secondary scrubland, and forest margins across Sri Lanka. It is not confined to primary rainforest and can persist in disturbed habitats. The north-central dry zone and transitional forest areas are likely localities.

Question 3

What does Celtis philippensis var. wightii look like?

Accepted Answer

It grows as a shrub or small tree with alternate, ovate leaves that have a distinctly rough, sandpaper-like upper surface — a recognisable trait of the genus. Flowers are small and inconspicuous, and the fruit is a small drupe that darkens when ripe. Three prominent veins near the leaf base are a useful identification feature.

Question 4

Is Celtis philippensis var. wightii an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is not considered globally threatened given its wide distribution across tropical Asia. Within Sri Lanka, lowland habitat loss poses general pressure on many forest plants, but no prominent formal conservation assessment specific to this variety has been published. It is documented primarily through botanical surveys and the national ayurvedic plant catalog.

Question 5

What is the reference code LK94005702?

Accepted Answer

LK94005702 is the catalog reference assigned to Celtis philippensis var. wightii within Sri Lanka's national inventory of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Such codes allow systematic cross-referencing between botanical, pharmacological, and traditional medicine records maintained by institutions like the Department of Ayurveda.

Question 6

How is Celtis philippensis var. wightii different from related species?

Accepted Answer

The variety wightii is a specific taxonomic subdivision of the broader Celtis philippensis species, named after botanist Robert Wight. It is distinguished from related varieties by subtle morphological features, and accurate identification typically requires herbarium comparison. The rough leaf texture and three-veined leaf base are shared with the wider species complex.

Question 7

Can I learn about Sri Lankan medicinal plants during a visit?

Accepted Answer

Yes — several botanical gardens and ayurvedic institutions in Sri Lanka, particularly around Kandy and Colombo, maintain collections and offer educational access to the island's medicinal plant heritage. Some rural community tours also include herbal garden visits as part of cultural experiences.
