Question 1

What is Blumea lacera used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Blumea lacera is used in Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic practice primarily as a diuretic, anthelmintic, and carminative. Leaf decoctions are traditionally taken to support urinary tract health and relieve digestive discomfort. The crushed leaves are also applied topically for minor wounds and skin irritations.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Blumea lacera?

Accepted Answer

Blumea lacera is commonly known as kukuruman in Sinhala, though regional variations exist across different parts of Sri Lanka. Both Sinhala and Tamil communities have traditional names for the plant, reflecting its long history of use across the island's major linguistic traditions.

Question 3

Where does Blumea lacera grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across Sri Lanka's lowland dry and intermediate zones, particularly in disturbed habitats such as roadsides, field margins, and village wastelands. It is common in the North Central and North Western provinces and is also found in parts of the wet zone, though less abundantly.

Question 4

Is Blumea lacera listed in the official Sri Lanka ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Blumea lacera is recognised in Sri Lanka's formal Ayurveda Pharmacopoeia, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This gives it official status alongside hundreds of other native and naturalised medicinal plants used in the country's state-supported traditional medicine system.

Question 5

What compounds are found in Blumea lacera?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, terpenoids, and essential oils — including camphor and related monoterpenes — as key constituents of Blumea lacera. These compounds are thought to underpin the plant's traditional reputation for antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic activity, though human clinical trials remain limited.

Question 6

Can you see Blumea lacera growing on a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Because Blumea lacera grows as a common wayside weed across Sri Lanka's lowland dry zone, visitors travelling through rural areas will often encounter it without realising it. Herb gardens at ayurvedic centres, spice farms near Matale, and botanical collections such as the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are good places to see it in a labelled, interpretive setting.

Question 7

Is it safe to use Blumea lacera preparations at home?

Accepted Answer

Self-treatment with any concentrated herbal preparation carries risks and is not recommended without guidance from a qualified ayurvedic practitioner. Pregnant women and people with existing kidney or liver conditions should be especially cautious. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda advises treating herbal remedies as a complement to, not a replacement for, conventional medical care.
