Question 1

How many trains run to Batticaloa per day?

Accepted Answer

Around ten train services call at Batticaloa Railway Station on a typical day. These include intercity express trains and ordinary stopping services operating along the Batticaloa Line. Numbers may vary on public holidays or during network disruptions.

Question 2

How long does the train from Colombo to Batticaloa take?

Accepted Answer

Intercity express services typically cover the Colombo Fort to Batticaloa route in around seven to eight hours, depending on the specific service and any delays. Ordinary trains take considerably longer due to multiple intermediate stops. Advance reservation on an intercity express is the most comfortable option for this journey.

Question 3

What is the phone number for Batticaloa Railway Station?

Accepted Answer

The station telephone number is 065-2224471. Station staff can assist with timetable queries, reservation availability, and platform information.

Question 4

Is Batticaloa Station a terminus or does the line continue further?

Accepted Answer

Batticaloa is the eastern terminus of the Batticaloa Line. No services continue beyond this point, so all arriving trains end their journey here and all departing trains originate from the station.

Question 5

How do I get from Batticaloa Railway Station to Pasikuda Beach?

Accepted Answer

Pasikuda Beach is approximately 35 kilometres north of Batticaloa town. The most practical option is a private car or taxi hired from outside the station. There is no direct rail link to Pasikuda; road transport is the only option for this final stretch.

Question 6

Can I fly to Batticaloa instead of taking the train?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Batticaloa Airport (BTC) receives domestic flights from Ratmalana Airport (RML) near Colombo, offering a much faster alternative to the train for travellers on tight schedules. Private road transfers from Colombo's international airport (CMB) are also available for door-to-door convenience.

Question 7

Is it safe to travel to Batticaloa by train?

Accepted Answer

The Batticaloa Line is a fully operational intercity rail route and is considered safe for travellers. The line was restored and upgraded following years of disruption, and Sri Lanka Railways maintains regular services. As with any long-distance train journey, keeping valuables secure and confirming schedules in advance is advisable.

Question 8

What is the best season to visit Batticaloa?

Accepted Answer

May through September is generally the driest and most visitor-friendly period in the Eastern Province, when the coast around Pasikuda and Kalkudah is calm and sunny. The northeast monsoon from around October to January brings rain and rougher seas, though the town itself remains accessible year-round.
