Question 1

How many trains stop at Aselapura Station per day?

Accepted Answer

Around three trains call at Aselapura on a typical operating day. Services run along the North Central line in both directions, linking the station to Colombo and to destinations further northeast in the province. Always check the current timetable with Sri Lanka Railways before travelling, as schedules at minor halts can change.

Question 2

Which railway line does Aselapura Station serve?

Accepted Answer

Aselapura is on the North Central line, which connects Colombo Fort with the Polonnaruwa District and continues towards the Eastern Province. The line passes through key junctions including Maho before entering the dry zone heartland of Sri Lanka.

Question 3

Is Aselapura Station staffed?

Accepted Answer

Aselapura is a small rural halt and may not have full-time staffing or ticketing facilities on-site. Travellers are advised to purchase tickets at a larger originating or junction station before boarding and to confirm the stop with the train guard.

Question 4

What district and province is Aselapura in?

Accepted Answer

The station is located in Polonnaruwa District, which forms part of Sri Lanka's North Central Province. The district is one of the country's most historically significant, containing the ruins of the medieval royal capital of Polonnaruwa.

Question 5

What are the main tourist attractions near Aselapura?

Accepted Answer

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the dominant attraction in the district and includes dagobas, palace ruins, and famous rock-carved Buddha statues. Parakrama Samudra tank, Minneriya National Park for elephant watching, and the Medirigiriya Mandalagiri Vehera are all within reach.

Question 6

How long does the train from Colombo to the Polonnaruwa area take?

Accepted Answer

Journey times on the North Central line from Colombo Fort to the Polonnaruwa area typically fall between four and five hours, depending on the service and the number of intermediate stops. Trains on this route are generally not air-conditioned, so travelling in the cooler morning hours is more comfortable.

Question 7

Can I combine a train journey through Aselapura with visiting Sigiriya?

Accepted Answer

Yes, though Sigiriya itself has no railway station. The most practical approach is to alight at Polonnaruwa or a nearby staffed station and arrange a private transfer or hire a tuk-tuk for the roughly 60 km drive to Sigiriya. Many travellers combine both sites in a two- to three-day Cultural Triangle loop.
