Question 1

What is Agrostistachys coriacea?

Accepted Answer

Agrostistachys coriacea is a tropical shrub or small tree in the family Euphorbiaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia including Sri Lanka. It is characterised by leathery leaves and small spike-borne flowers. The species is catalogued among Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants and is found in humid lowland and mid-elevation forests.

Question 2

Where does Agrostistachys coriacea grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows in the shaded understorey of wet-zone tropical forests, particularly in the southwestern lowlands and lower montane regions of Sri Lanka. It favours high-rainfall environments with a closed forest canopy. Areas like Sinharaja Forest Reserve represent typical habitat for this plant.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Agrostistachys coriacea?

Accepted Answer

The plant is listed in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue, indicating recognised traditional therapeutic applications. Phytochemical research on related Agrostistachys species has explored potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Specific traditional uses vary by practitioner, and formal clinical studies on this species remain limited.

Question 4

Is Agrostistachys coriacea endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Agrostistachys coriacea is not strictly endemic to Sri Lanka; its range extends across tropical South and Southeast Asia. However, its presence in Sri Lanka is ecologically significant given the island's status as a global biodiversity hotspot with a rich native forest flora.

Question 5

Can I see Agrostistachys coriacea as a tourist in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Encounters are unlikely without a guided forest walk in an appropriate wet-zone habitat. The plant is not cultivated in accessible gardens and is best sought by visitors joining nature walks with qualified botanist or naturalist guides in areas such as Sinharaja or the Makandawa Rainforest.

Question 6

Is it legal to collect Agrostistachys coriacea plants or seeds in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Collecting plant material from Sri Lanka's forests without a specific government permit is illegal. This applies to wild plants generally, including those with Ayurvedic significance. Visitors are strongly advised to observe and photograph plants without removing any part of them.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue work?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official register of native plants used in traditional medicine, documenting species names, local names, and recognised applications. This catalogue draws on centuries of empirical practice by traditional healers and is periodically updated with input from botanical and pharmacological research.
