Question 1

What is Abarema subcoriocea used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Abarema subcoriocea is catalogued as part of Sri Lanka's official list of ayurvedic medicinal plants. Plants in the Abarema genus and the broader Fabaceae family are traditionally associated with preparations used for inflammatory conditions and skin ailments, though specific documented applications for this species in English-language sources are limited. Its inclusion in the national catalog reflects acknowledged traditional use within Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice.

Question 2

Where is Abarema subcoriocea found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with the tropical lowland and mid-elevation forests of Sri Lanka, particularly the wet zone. It favours moist, shaded forest environments and forest margins rather than dry scrubland or high-altitude habitats. Precise range mapping for this species is part of ongoing botanical documentation efforts in Sri Lanka.

Question 3

What family does Abarema subcoriocea belong to?

Accepted Answer

Abarema subcoriocea belongs to the family Fabaceae (legumes), within the subfamily Mimosoideae. The Abarema genus comprises tropical trees and shrubs found across South and Southeast Asia. The species name subcoriocea refers to the somewhat leathery texture of the plant's leaves.

Question 4

What is the reference code for Abarema subcoriocea in Sri Lanka's plant catalog?

Accepted Answer

The plant is listed under the reference code LK94005656 in Sri Lanka's national botanical and ayurvedic plant catalog. This code is used for official documentation, research cross-referencing, and conservation tracking purposes.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants are catalogued in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic system?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has documented thousands of plant species for traditional and ayurvedic use, drawn from the island's total of over 3,000 recorded flowering plant species. A significant number of these are endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world. The Department of Ayurveda maintains the authoritative catalog.

Question 6

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a visitor?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya, near Kandy, offers one of the most comprehensive living collections of Sri Lankan flora, including medicinal species. Spice and herbal gardens around Matale and Kandy provide guided introductions to plants used in ayurvedic medicine and local cuisine. Many tours of the hill country and wet zone forests can be combined with visits to these sites.

Question 7

Is Abarema subcoriocea an endemic species in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The endemic status of Abarema subcoriocea within Sri Lanka has not been conclusively confirmed in widely available botanical literature. The Abarema genus occurs across tropical Asia more broadly, though individual species within it may have restricted ranges. Sri Lanka's ongoing biodiversity documentation work continues to refine the conservation status of many plant species.
