Question 1

What is Doona zeylanica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Doona zeylanica is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue primarily for the resin it produces. This resin has been used in traditional preparations associated with wound healing and skin conditions. Its use is typically guided by qualified Ayurvedic practitioners rather than as a common household remedy.

Question 2

Is Doona zeylanica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Doona zeylanica is endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world in the wild. It belongs to the Dipterocarpaceae family and grows in the island's wet-zone lowland rainforests. Its endemism makes it an ecologically significant and carefully protected species.

Question 3

Where can I find Doona zeylanica in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found in Sri Lanka's southwestern wet-zone lowland forests, particularly in and around protected rainforest areas. Guided nature walks in forest reserves of the southwestern lowlands offer the best opportunity to encounter the tree. Identifying it reliably requires a knowledgeable local botanist or guide.

Question 4

Is Doona zeylanica a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

Doona zeylanica is considered a threatened species due to habitat loss from deforestation in Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone. Conservation efforts by government and non-governmental organisations focus on protecting the forest patches where the tree occurs naturally. Its endemism makes any population decline particularly significant.

Question 5

What family does Doona zeylanica belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Dipterocarpaceae, a group of trees well known for their tall canopy growth and winged fruits. Dipterocarps are ecologically important across South and Southeast Asian rainforests, and several species are valued for both timber and medicinal resins.

Question 6

What is the Sinhala name for Doona zeylanica?

Accepted Answer

The tree is commonly referred to as Doon or Doonawak in Sinhala. The Sinhala name reflects its long association with local communities and traditional knowledge systems in Sri Lanka's wet-zone regions.

Question 7

How is the resin of Doona zeylanica traditionally used?

Accepted Answer

The resin from Doona zeylanica, a type of dammar, has historically been used in traditional medicine, incense preparation, and as a preservative. Within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, it appears in compound formulations. Across the broader Dipterocarpaceae family, resins have a wide range of documented traditional applications across Asia.
