Question 1

What is Doona macrophylla?

Accepted Answer

Doona macrophylla is a large-leaved canopy tree native to Sri Lanka's wet zone rainforests, belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae. It is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medical tradition and is notable for its large leaves and the winged fruits characteristic of the dipterocarp group.

Question 2

Is Doona macrophylla endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Doona macrophylla is endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka, meaning it is found almost exclusively on the island. It grows primarily in the humid lowland and submontane rainforests of the wet zone, particularly in Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces.

Question 3

What medicinal uses does Doona macrophylla have?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic system, trees in the Doona genus are used for their resinous exudate, bark, and leaf extracts, traditionally applied in treatments for skin conditions, inflammation, and wound care. Any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 4

Is Doona macrophylla a threatened species?

Accepted Answer

Several dipterocarp species in Sri Lanka, including members of the Doona genus, are considered threatened due to deforestation and habitat loss in the wet zone. Conservation efforts focus on protecting remaining forest patches and promoting sustainable land use.

Question 5

Where can I see Doona macrophylla in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The best places to encounter endemic dipterocarp trees including Doona macrophylla are protected wet zone forests such as Sinharaja, and botanical collections at Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens near Kandy. A knowledgeable local guide will help with species identification.

Question 6

What does the name macrophylla mean?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet macrophylla comes from the Latin for 'large-leaved', directly describing this tree's notably large leaves, which distinguish it from other members of the Doona genus found in Sri Lanka.

Question 7

How is Doona macrophylla different from Shorea species?

Accepted Answer

Doona is closely related to the genus Shorea and is sometimes treated as a subgenus within it. Both belong to the Dipterocarpaceae family and share similar resinous properties and winged fruits, but Doona species are concentrated specifically in Sri Lanka rather than distributed across broader South and Southeast Asia.
