Question 1

What is Desmodium triflorum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian ayurvedic practice, Desmodium triflorum is traditionally used to address fever, skin conditions, and digestive complaints. Decoctions of the plant are taken orally, while crushed leaves are sometimes applied externally as a poultice. It also appears in compound formulations targeting specific health imbalances according to ayurvedic diagnosis.

Question 2

What does Desmodium triflorum look like?

Accepted Answer

Desmodium triflorum is a low-growing, creeping herb with small trifoliate leaves — three rounded leaflets per stem. It produces tiny pink to purple flowers, typically in clusters of one to three. Its seed pods are segmented and covered in fine hooked hairs that cling to fabric and fur, helping to distribute seeds widely.

Question 3

Where does Desmodium triflorum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across Sri Lanka's dry, intermediate, and wet zones, from coastal lowlands to mid-elevation areas. It prefers open, sunny habitats with well-drained or disturbed soils, and is commonly found along roadsides, paddy field margins, and the edges of home gardens and forest clearings.

Question 4

Is Desmodium triflorum the same as ticktrefoil?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Desmodium triflorum is commonly called three-flowered ticktrefoil in English, referring both to its characteristic flower clusters and the tick-like hooked hairs on its seed pods. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is one of many Desmodium species found throughout tropical Asia.

Question 5

Is Desmodium triflorum listed in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Desmodium triflorum is included in Sri Lanka's official catalog of ayurvedic medicinal plants, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Health. Its inclusion reflects its recognised use in traditional healing systems practised on the island for centuries.

Question 6

What are the main phytochemicals found in Desmodium triflorum?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds in Desmodium triflorum. These classes of compounds are broadly associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. However, clinical research on this specific species remains preliminary, and findings should not be interpreted as confirmed therapeutic claims.

Question 7

Can I see Desmodium triflorum growing in Sri Lanka during a visit?

Accepted Answer

The plant is widespread and not confined to protected reserves, so it is likely you may encounter it in rural or semi-urban landscapes across the island. Naturalist guides in areas like Sinharaja or other forested regions are sometimes able to identify it and other medicinal herbs during nature walks.
