Question 1

What is Desmodium gangeticum used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Desmodium gangeticum is one of the ten roots in the classical Ayurvedic Dashamula group. Its root is traditionally used in preparations for respiratory complaints, nervous debility, fever, rheumatic pain, and urinary disorders. It is considered a vata-pacifying herb with tonic and restorative properties.

Question 2

What part of Desmodium gangeticum is used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The root is the primary part of the plant used in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine. It is typically dried and prepared as a water decoction, or incorporated into compound formulas, medicated oils, and medicated ghee preparations.

Question 3

Where does Desmodium gangeticum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows widely across Sri Lanka's lowland and intermediate zones, typically in open scrub forests, forest margins, and disturbed land. It is most common in drier areas and favours well-drained, lateritic soils. It does not occur in dense tropical rainforest.

Question 4

Is Desmodium gangeticum the same as sal leaved desmodium?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Desmodium gangeticum is sometimes called sal leaved desmodium in English, reflecting the shape of its leaves. It is also known in older botanical literature as Hedysarum gangeticum. In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice it is commonly referred to as Nila or Maha-nila.

Question 5

What does scientific research say about Desmodium gangeticum?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory and animal studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds in the plant with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and adaptogenic activity. Some research has also explored its potential effects on the nervous system and blood sugar balance. However, large-scale human clinical trials are still limited, so traditional use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 6

What is Dashamula and how does Desmodium gangeticum fit into it?

Accepted Answer

Dashamula is a classical Ayurvedic group of ten medicinal roots used together in tonic and restorative formulations. Desmodium gangeticum is one of the smaller-root members of this group. The Dashamula decoction is commonly prescribed to support respiratory, musculoskeletal, and post-partum recovery.

Question 7

Can I buy Desmodium gangeticum preparations in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer
