Question 1

What is Centranthera indica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Centranthera indica is documented in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog and has traditionally been associated with applications related to skin conditions, inflammation, and general wellness. It is typically used in compound formulations under the guidance of trained practitioners rather than as a standalone remedy. Clinical evidence for its therapeutic effects remains limited, and professional consultation is advisable before use.

Question 2

Where does Centranthera indica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in moist lowland grasslands, scrublands, and open terrain at low to mid elevations across several provinces of Sri Lanka. It is semi-parasitic, drawing some of its nutrients from the roots of host grasses, which shapes where it can establish itself. It tends to appear in patchy distributions rather than dense stands.

Question 3

Is Centranthera indica native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Centranthera indica is native to a broad region of South and Southeast Asia that includes Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, and parts of southern China. In Sri Lanka it is a recognized component of the island's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog and has been used locally for generations. It is not endemic to Sri Lanka but is well established on the island.

Question 4

What family does Centranthera indica belong to?

Accepted Answer

Centranthera indica belongs to the family Orobanchaceae, which encompasses a range of parasitic and semi-parasitic flowering plants. It was formerly classified within Scrophulariaceae before molecular studies prompted reclassification. Members of Orobanchaceae are found across tropical and temperate regions worldwide.

Question 5

How does Centranthera indica look — how can I identify it in the wild?

Accepted Answer

It is a slender, erect herb typically reaching around 20–50 cm tall, with rough stems, narrow opposite leaves, and small tubular flowers that are pale yellow to whitish. It tends to grow in open grassland or scrubby habitat and flowers during wetter periods of the year. The rough texture of the stem and the small, clustered flowers are useful identifying features.

Question 6

Are there other semi-parasitic medicinal plants in Sri Lanka similar to Centranthera indica?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka's flora includes several semi-parasitic and fully parasitic plant species, many of which have roles in traditional medicine. Plants in the Orobanchaceae family share a similar ecological strategy, partially relying on host plant roots for water and nutrients. Sri Lanka's diverse ecosystems, from dry lowland grasslands to moist montane zones, support a wide variety of such specialist plants.

Question 7

Can tourists see Centranthera indica when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Spotting Centranthera indica in the wild requires a guided botanical walk in suitable grassland or scrub habitat and a keen eye, as the plant is small and not always conspicuous. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy and various ayurvedic centers across the island offer structured introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal flora. Rural community tours in the wet and dry zone lowlands offer the best chance of encountering this plant in its natural setting.
