Question 1

What is Cassia tora used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic medicine, Cassia tora is primarily used to treat skin conditions such as ringworm and fungal infections. The seeds, leaves, and roots each have distinct applications — from topical antifungal pastes to mild laxative decoctions. It is classified in classical texts under the name Chakramarda and is associated with reducing Kapha and Pitta imbalances.

Question 2

Where does Cassia tora grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cassia tora grows widely across Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, particularly in the North Central, Eastern, and Southern lowland areas. It favours disturbed soils, roadsides, paddy field margins, and open scrubland, and is one of the first plants to colonise degraded ground.

Question 3

What does the Cassia tora plant look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small erect annual herb, usually under a metre tall, with compound leaves made up of paired leaflets and small yellow flowers. Its most distinctive feature is its long, curved seed pods — up to 15 cm — which give it the common name sickle pod or sickle senna.

Question 4

Can Cassia tora seeds be eaten or used as a beverage?

Accepted Answer

Yes, roasted Cassia tora seeds have traditionally been used as a caffeine-free substitute for coffee in parts of South and Southeast Asia. Several modern herbal wellness brands in Sri Lanka produce Cassia tora seed-based beverages marketed as digestive and liver-supportive drinks.

Question 5

What is cassia gum and how is it related to Cassia tora?

Accepted Answer

Cassia gum is an endosperm extract derived from Cassia tora seeds. It is used commercially as a food-grade thickening and gelling agent, approved in many regulatory frameworks including the European Union. It is distinct from guar gum or locust bean gum but serves similar functions in food manufacturing.

Question 6

Is Cassia tora the same as senna?

Accepted Answer

Cassia tora is closely related to senna (Senna alexandrina) and was historically classified within the same genus. Both plants contain anthraquinone compounds associated with laxative activity, but they are distinct species with different botanical characteristics and somewhat different traditional uses.

Question 7

Are there any side effects of using Cassia tora?

Accepted Answer

At conventional doses used in traditional preparations, Cassia tora is generally considered safe. However, the anthraquinone glycosides in the seeds can cause loose stools or diarrhoea if consumed in large amounts. Prolonged internal use without practitioner guidance is not advisable, and people on medication should seek professional advice before use.
