Question 1

What is the Sinhala name for Calophyllum inophyllum?

Accepted Answer

Calophyllum inophyllum is known as Domba in Sinhala. It is one of the most familiar large shade trees along Sri Lanka's coastline and is often planted near Buddhist temples and historic sites.

Question 2

What is Domba oil used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Domba oil, extracted from the dried seeds of Calophyllum inophyllum, is used in Ayurvedic medicine primarily for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. It is applied topically for skin conditions, joint pain, and muscle soreness. The oil contains active compounds including calophyllolide, which have attracted significant pharmacological research interest.

Question 3

Where can Calophyllum inophyllum trees be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows most abundantly in Sri Lanka's coastal lowlands, particularly along the western and southern coastlines. It is also found near ancient temple grounds, riverbanks, and within transitional coastal forest zones. Specimens are commonly seen between Negombo and Galle along the southern coastal belt.

Question 4

Is Calophyllum inophyllum used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is formally documented in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic materia medica. The bark, leaves, seed oil, and latex are all used in traditional formulations. Oil pressed from the seed is the most commercially prominent product, used both locally and exported for international skincare markets.

Question 5

What does the Domba tree fruit look like?

Accepted Answer

The fruit of Calophyllum inophyllum is round, roughly 2–4 cm in diameter, and resembles a large marble. It ripens from green through yellow to a deep purple or brownish colour. Inside is a single large seed with an oil-rich kernel that is the source of Domba or Tamanu oil.

Question 6

Can Calophyllum inophyllum oil be used on skin?

Accepted Answer

Domba oil has a long history of topical use across the Indo-Pacific, including in Sri Lanka. Traditional and modern applications include treatment of dry or damaged skin, eczema, scars, and sun damage. It is generally used in refined or diluted form in cosmetic products; undiluted raw oil has a strong smell and dark colour that may not suit all formulations.

Question 7

Is the Domba tree endangered in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Calophyllum inophyllum is not classified as globally threatened, but coastal habitat loss has reduced wild populations in some parts of Sri Lanka. The species benefits from conservation measures within coastal buffer zones and is included in some replanting programmes, particularly in areas affected by storm erosion or tsunami damage.
