Question 1

What is Bauhinia variegata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia variegata is used across multiple parts — bark, leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots — in traditional ayurvedic medicine. Key applications include supporting digestive health, managing blood sugar, treating skin conditions, and addressing inflammatory complaints. It appears in both single-herb preparations and compound formulations used in Sri Lanka and broader South Asian medical traditions.

Question 2

What does Bauhinia variegata look like?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows six to twelve metres tall and is best identified by its large, bilobed leaves, which resemble a butterfly's wings or a camel's hoof. Flowers are showy, with five petals ranging from pale pink to deep purple, often streaked with a darker central marking. Blooms typically appear from late December through March, frequently before the new leaves emerge.

Question 3

Where can I find Bauhinia variegata in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows across a range of elevations in Sri Lanka, from the dry-zone lowlands to mid-country areas. It is commonly planted along roadsides, within Buddhist temple grounds, and in home gardens. Older trees are frequently found near ancient heritage sites in the north-central dry zone.

Question 4

Can Bauhinia variegata flowers be eaten?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Young flower buds of Bauhinia variegata are edible and are used as a vegetable in parts of South Asia — typically pickled or cooked. They are also valued in traditional medicine for their reported benefits in managing intestinal and digestive conditions.

Question 5

Is Bauhinia variegata the same as the orchid tree?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Bauhinia variegata is commonly called the orchid tree or mountain ebony in English. The 'orchid tree' name refers to the flower shape, which resembles certain orchid blooms. It should not be confused with Bauhinia purpurea, a closely related species sometimes given the same common name.

Question 6

What are the main bioactive compounds in Bauhinia variegata?

Accepted Answer

Pharmacological studies have identified flavonoids, tannins, glycosides, and alkaloids in various parts of the plant. These compounds are associated with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-hyperglycaemic, and hepatoprotective activities in laboratory settings, though human clinical evidence is still limited.

Question 7

Is it safe to use Bauhinia variegata as a home remedy?

Accepted Answer

It is advisable to consult a qualified ayurvedic practitioner before using Bauhinia variegata medicinally. Appropriate dosage and preparation are important factors, and the plant may interact with conventional medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should seek specific professional guidance before use.
