Question 1

What is Bauhinia racemosa used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic tradition, Bauhinia racemosa is used for a range of conditions including skin disorders, diarrhoea, liver complaints, wound healing, and as a general tonic. Different parts of the plant — bark, leaves, flowers, seeds, and root — are used in different preparations. Scientific studies have investigated several of these traditional claims, finding evidence of antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity.

Question 2

Where does Bauhinia racemosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia racemosa is found primarily in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, including the North Central, Northern, and North-Western provinces. It grows in scrublands, degraded forest margins, and along roadsides, tolerating drought and poor soils well. It is also cultivated in Ayurvedic herb gardens across the island.

Question 3

How do I identify Bauhinia racemosa?

Accepted Answer

The most distinctive feature is its bilobed leaf — two roughly equal rounded lobes with a deep cleft at the tip, resembling a cloven hoof or joined hearts. The flowers are small, pale yellowish-white, fragrant, and arranged in drooping racemes. The tree also produces long, narrow, flat seed pods that can reach 15–30 cm in length.

Question 4

Is Bauhinia racemosa the same as the purple orchid tree?

Accepted Answer

No. The purple orchid tree is typically Bauhinia purpurea or Bauhinia variegata, ornamental species planted widely in Sri Lankan towns and gardens with large, showy pink or purple flowers. Bauhinia racemosa is a different species with smaller, pale yellowish-white flowers and a natural habitat in dry-zone scrubland rather than gardens. Each species has a distinct medicinal profile.

Question 5

Which part of Bauhinia racemosa is most used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The bark is the most widely referenced medicinal part of Bauhinia racemosa in Ayurvedic texts and traditional practice. It is used in decoctions and preparations associated with digestive complaints, skin conditions, and liver support. The leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots are also used in various traditional formulations.

Question 6

Is Bauhinia racemosa safe to use?

Accepted Answer

As with any medicinal plant, Bauhinia racemosa should be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic or medical practitioner. Laboratory studies have generally found low toxicity in standard extract concentrations, but self-medication with plant extracts carries risks, particularly for people with existing medical conditions or those taking pharmaceutical medications. Always consult a healthcare professional before using herbal remedies.

Question 7

Can I see medicinal plants like Bauhinia racemosa on a tour of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several Ayurvedic gardens and ethnobotanical tours in Sri Lanka include plants like Bauhinia racemosa alongside explanations of their traditional uses. The dry-zone national parks and the environs of ancient cities such as Polonnaruwa also provide opportunities to encounter the plant in its natural habitat during guided nature walks.
