The CheRiz Boutique Villa Hotel is a small glass-walled house of named rooms 2.5 kilometres north of Nuwara Eliya town, looking over tea and hills. It stands just off the Kandy road, has been open since 2018, and it is run on personal, tailor-made service, with a rooftop lounge, a double-height loft lounge, a wellness centre with a spa and sauna and an outdoor hot spa bath in the garden.
Every room at The CheRiz has its own name rather than a number, and most are walled in floor-to-ceiling glass so that the tea gardens and hills fill the windows. Rooms have a flat-screen television and a mini-bar, bathrobes and slippers. The two names below are the ones you will see when you book.
The hotel can also combine its attic rooms into larger family suites, such as The Devon and The Elgin together as a two-bedroom suite with two bathrooms; ask us if you would like one of these arrangements.
The restaurant serves fine dining built around locally grown ingredients, mixing Sri Lankan and international cooking, and breakfast is served as a buffet. Beyond the dining room you can eat in your room or on your balcony, take high tea in the garden, or have a barbecue on the lawn. Breakfast in bed can be arranged.
Most guests come for the views and the quiet. Indoors there is a rooftop lounge, a double-height loft lounge and a media corner; the wellness centre has a spa and a sauna, there is a Technogym fitness room, and the garden has an outdoor hot spa bath. The hotel arranges high tea in the tea garden opposite, village tours through the surrounding farmland and cultural evenings, and Wi-Fi, room service, housekeeping with evening turndown, and parking are all provided.
The hotel stands among the tea gardens just above town, and the Pekoe Trail, the long-distance walking path through the tea country, passes through Nuwara Eliya. In town are Lake Gregory, Victoria Park, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and the colonial-era Holy Trinity Church. Pidurutalagala, the island's highest mountain, is about 3 kilometres away in a straight line, and day trips reach Hakgala Botanical Gardens, the Seetha Amman Temple and Horton Plains National Park, best started at dawn for the walk to World's End.
Yes. Nuwara Eliya's station on the hill-country Main Line is Nanu Oya, about 5.5 kilometres south of the hotel in a straight line and further by road through town. Arrange a pick-up with the hotel or with us in advance.
From Bandaranaike International Airport the hotel is about 97 kilometres away in a straight line, but the road climbs through the hills and is a good deal longer, so plan on most of a day's drive. The hotel offers airport pick-ups, or you can book a private transfer from Colombo airport to The CheRiz, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples who want a small, personal and quietly stylish base with big views, and families or groups of friends who would like a whole house to themselves within easy reach of town. Two or three nights gives you time for Horton Plains, a tea factory and a slow day in the lounges. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Nuwara Eliya.
