Thotalagala Tea Plantation Bungalow is a restored 19th-century planter's bungalow on the historic Pitaratmalie Estate near Haputale, perched on the edge of the Haputale Escarpment. It is surrounded by 20 acres of lawns and patana grass, with views across the 4,000-hectare tea plantation that stretches up to Lipton's Seat. Haputale Railway Station is 2.6 km away and Diyatalawa Railway Station 4.1 km.
The bungalow is 129 km as the crow flies from Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake. By road the drive is about 189 km and usually takes 5 to 5.5 hours, depending on traffic and the weather. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Thotalagala Tea Plantation Bungalow.
The bungalow has seven individually themed suites, each named after a prominent figure in Sri Lanka's tea history, among them Sir Thomas Lipton and James Taylor. Rooms are furnished with antiques, teak panelling and period décor, and each suite has a spacious bedroom, a private sitting area and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower and a tub.
Dining is all-inclusive, with à la carte menus, afternoon high tea and pre-dinner cocktails, and meals prepared with fresh produce from the estate's own gardens. There is an infinity pool overlooking the tea plantations and surrounding mountains, a teak-panelled library and smoking room, complimentary Wi-Fi throughout and free on-site parking.
You can hike or drive up to Lipton's Seat for panoramic views of the tea country, take a guided tour of the Dambatenne Tea Factory established by Sir Thomas Lipton, and visit the Tudor-style Adisham Monastery, known for its gardens and homemade jams. Guided walks through the tea estates explain how tea is grown and processed, and Horton Plains National Park, with its cloud forest and grasslands, is within reach for a day out.
