Question 1

What is Tetracera akara used for medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Tetracera akara is documented in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue and is traditionally used in preparations targeting fever, skin conditions, and inflammatory complaints. The bark and stem are the parts most commonly used, typically prepared as decoctions or poultices. Its properties are described in Ayurvedic terms as primarily astringent and cooling.

Question 2

What family does Tetracera akara belong to?

Accepted Answer

Tetracera akara belongs to the plant family Dilleniaceae, a group of flowering plants distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The genus Tetracera within this family is recognised by its characteristically rough, sandpaper-textured leaves caused by dense silica-rich surface hairs.

Question 3

Where does Tetracera akara grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found in the lowland and mid-elevation forests of Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It grows as a woody climber, twining over surrounding vegetation, and is generally harvested from wild or semi-wild populations rather than being cultivated commercially.

Question 4

Is Tetracera akara listed in the official Sri Lankan Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is catalogued under the reference LK94006595 in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic medicinal plant records, maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. This listing is part of a broader national effort to document and standardise traditional plant-based medicine on the island.

Question 5

What does the rough texture of Tetracera leaves come from?

Accepted Answer

The roughness is caused by a dense covering of silica-rich trichomes — microscopic surface structures on the leaf. This feature is characteristic of the entire Tetracera genus and has historically made the dried leaves useful as a natural abrasive for polishing in addition to their medicinal applications.

Question 6

How is Ayurvedic plant knowledge preserved in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka preserves its Ayurvedic plant knowledge through a combination of government institutions, academic research, and living oral tradition. The Department of Ayurveda maintains pharmacopoeia records, while universities such as the Institute of Indigenous Medicine conduct ethnobotanical surveys. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya also houses significant herbarium collections related to medicinal flora.

Question 7

Are there other Tetracera species with medicinal uses?

Accepted Answer

The genus Tetracera contains around 40 species across tropical regions globally, and several are noted in traditional medicine systems in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America for wound healing and fever treatment. In Sri Lanka, Tetracera akara is the species specifically referenced in the national Ayurvedic catalogue.
