Stone Bridge and Library (Pothgula)

The road leading to this rather unknown Halpan Ela Gal Palama is located close to the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds). Traveling 3 kms from Sangamitta Mawatha, you can reach the point where this ancient stone bridge crosses the Halpan Ela. Traveling further down on the same road you can reach the more famous Stone Bridge over the Malwathu Oya.

Only a part of this stone bridge can be seen today. Stone slabs are laid across rows of 3 stone pillars. This bridge is hidden behind a building and only those who knows the existence of this bridge will visit.

Stone bridge that is made with rock blocks cast out of rock outcrops of the ancient city of Anuradhapura is a classic example of engineering marvels that the ancestors of Sri Lankans were able to achieve. Historically, it is known that some of world's best steel has been made in the Asian region and Sri Lanka was in the forefront of that technology and the steel manufactured such a way had been used to make the "Damascus Swards" as well. These structures are said to be at least 2000 years old.
