Flying Ravana is a dual-cable zip-line set in the hills above Ella, a small town in Sri Lanka's Badulla District at around 1,041 metres above sea level. Two riders travel side by side on parallel steel cables — a format that makes it as sociable as it is exhilarating — covering 550 metres at speeds of up to 80 km/h. The launch point sits at Mini Adam's Peak, and the line carries riders out over a sweep of tea estates and forest canopy before the terrain falls away to frame the wide natural pass known as the Ella Gap.
The setting does a great deal of the work. Ella's hills are covered in cloud forest and tea plantations, and the elevation means the air is cooler than the lowlands even on a clear day. From the cable, the view opens across layered mountain ranges to the southern plains — the kind of panorama that is difficult to reach by any other means. Some riders bring an action camera or selfie stick to record the run; both hands are free for exactly that purpose once the pulley is moving.
Safety equipment is included in full: a full-body harness with carabiner attachment, a helmet, and a briefing from an instructor before the run. The zip-line and its instructors hold certification from the European Rope Course Association (ERCA), and each session is managed by ERCA-certified Zip Masters. Transportation from the landing platform back to the reception area is also provided. The broader adventure park on site offers additional activities — quad biking, abseiling, archery, and a climbing wall among them — for those who want to extend the day.
There are physical requirements for participation. Riders must weigh between 30 kg and 100 kg and stand between 90 cm and 190 cm tall; the minimum age is 6 years. Pregnant women are not permitted to ride. Clothing should fit reasonably close to the body — loose or baggy garments are not suitable — skirts and dresses are not recommended, and long hair must be tied back securely before gearing up. Operations are paused during thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, so weather on the day will have a bearing on timing.
The facility operates daily, with sessions running from 9:00 am through to the late afternoon. There is a midday break between 1:30 pm and 2:00 pm, and a last-entry cut-off before the close of day; it is worth confirming current hours when you book, as these details can change seasonally. Ella itself sits roughly 200 km east of Colombo, and the journey up through the hill country — whether by road or the famous train route — is a worthwhile part of reaching it.
