Flying Ravana Mega Zipline

Perched in the hill-country town of Ella, Flying Ravana Mega Zipline is Sri Lanka's first mega zipline and one of its most talked-about adventure experiences. The ride sends you across more than half a kilometre of cable at speeds of up to 80 km/h, with the tea-covered ridges and forested valleys of the Ella region spread out below. It is the kind of activity that looks spectacular in photographs and feels even better in person.

What makes Flying Ravana different from a standard zipline?

Most ziplines in Sri Lanka are short forest rides aimed at gentle thrills. Flying Ravana operates at a different scale. The cable stretches over 500 metres and is rigged on a dual-lane system, so two riders can race side by side simultaneously. The elevation and length mean you stay airborne long enough to take in the panorama properly — rows of tea bushes stepping down the hillside, patches of cloud forest in the gullies, and on a clear day, the silhouette of distant peaks.

The name nods to the mythological king Ravana, whose legendary domain is said to have been centred in this part of Sri Lanka. Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave are both within a short drive, making the zipline a natural complement to a wider exploration of the area's folklore and scenery.

What is the experience like from start to finish?

Arrival is straightforward — the park sits close to the main Ella road and is well signposted. After check-in, staff run through a safety briefing and fit you with a harness and helmet. The equipment is checked by trained operators before every ride; the process is unhurried and thorough.

The launch platform looks out over the valley, which can be a memorable moment before you even clip in. Once you push off, the acceleration is immediate. The ride lasts roughly 45 seconds to a minute depending on conditions — long enough to feel the altitude, short enough to leave you wanting a second go. Both lanes finish at the same landing platform, where staff guide you down safely.

Beyond the zipline itself, the park offers additional activities including ATV rides, abseiling, and archery, so it is easy to spend two to three hours on site if you want to make a full morning or afternoon of it.

Who can use the Flying Ravana zipline?

The zipline is designed for a wide range of guests, but operators apply standard weight and health restrictions. Riders typically need to fall within a specified weight range — the staff will confirm current limits at check-in. Children can ride provided they meet the minimum weight and height requirements. Guests with heart conditions, back problems, or who are pregnant are advised not to participate.

No prior experience is needed. The harness system does not require you to hold on, so the ride is accessible even for those trying a zipline for the first time.

When is the best time to visit Flying Ravana?

Ella sits in the Uva Province and receives rainfall from both monsoon cycles, so the weather is changeable year-round. The driest and most consistently clear months tend to fall between January and April and again from July into early September. Morning slots are generally better than afternoon rides: mist often lifts by mid-morning and cloud build-up can obscure the valley views later in the day.

Weekdays are quieter than weekends. If you are visiting during a public holiday or school break, booking ahead is advisable — walk-up availability can run out by late morning.

How do I get to Flying Ravana from Ella town?

The zipline park is located a few kilometres from Ella town, close to Ravana Falls on the Ella–Wellawaya road. From Ella's main strip it is a short tuk-tuk ride. If you are travelling from Colombo or Kandy by train, Ella station is the closest stop — the scenic Kandy-to-Ella rail journey through the hill country is itself a highlight of any visit to this part of Sri Lanka.

Drivers coming by road should follow the A23 south from Ella towards Wellawaya; the park is clearly marked on the left before the falls. Parking is available on site.

What else is there to do near the zipline?

Ella rewards a full day's exploration. Ravana Falls is within walking distance of the zipline park and is one of the more accessible waterfalls in the region. The short hike to Little Adam's Peak offers a gentle morning walk with wide views over the valley, and Ella Rock is a longer but rewarding trail for confident walkers.

The tea estates surrounding Ella are largely working plantations producing Ceylon Tea, and several offer informal tours and tastings. If you are planning a wider hill-country itinerary, Horton Plains National Park is roughly an hour and a half by road from Ella and makes a logical addition to a two-day loop.

For adventure activities beyond Ella, adventure tours across Sri Lanka can be arranged to include white-water rafting, cycling, and other active experiences tailored to your itinerary.

Tips for making the most of your visit

  • Wear closed-toe shoes — sandals or flip-flops are not suitable for the harness setup.
  • Secure loose items such as glasses, hats, and phones before boarding; the speed makes drops likely.
  • Arrive early if you plan to combine the zipline with other park activities — the full menu of options takes two to three hours.
  • Bring a light layer. Ella's hill-country altitude means temperatures can feel cool, especially on the platform before launch.
  • Check the weather forecast. The ride operates in most conditions, but heavy rain significantly reduces visibility and can affect the experience.
