A novel set in Sri Lanka in the years after the war ended, in the small seaside town of Unawatuna, a short way along the coast from Galle Fort. Several young people from very different backgrounds find their lives drawn together there over the course of a few months, in ways none of them anticipates, with the country still recovering from what it has come through.
Orinth wants to write a perfect novel. Kanishka wants to see ethnic harmony in a country emerging from years of conflict. Sanith simply wants to live in peace in the place he calls home. Their separate hopes meet under the weight of a turbulent recent past, and the book follows what happens when they do.
Aditha Dissanayake is a Sri Lankan novelist writing in English; this follows her first novel, Somewhere in the Green Hills. Her interest here is in the moods and inner lives of men and women of different races — in peace, in war, and in love — and the story is told with the same warmth and attentiveness to character that readers of her earlier work will recognise.
Published in Colombo by M. D. Gunasena & Co., an established Sri Lankan publishing house. It will suit readers drawn to contemporary Sri Lankan fiction in English, particularly writing that deals with the country's post-war years through the lives of ordinary young people rather than through politics.
