About this experience

Your driver picks you up at your Kalutara hotel and transfers you south in an air-conditioned vehicle to Udawalawe National Park — a 30,821-hectare reserve sitting just below Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. The escarpment forms a striking backdrop as you arrive at one of the island's most rewarding wildlife destinations, best known for its large resident elephant population and open, African-style landscape around the Udawalawe reservoir.

At the park, you board a jeep and head into the sanctuary for a dedicated safari. Keep your eyes on the grasslands and scrub for elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birdlife. A one-litre bottle of mineral water is provided per person. The tour runs for nine hours in total, is conducted entirely in English, and is private — so the jeep is yours alone. Note that park entrance tickets, meals, and gratuities are not included.
