About this experience
Step into a 4x4 safari jeep and head into Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka's premier wildlife reserves sitting 180 kilometres from Colombo in the south-central highlands. Over three hours, your experienced driver-cum-tracker guides you across open plains and grasslands in search of the park's famous elephant herds — Udawalawe is widely regarded as the best place in Sri Lanka to spot these giants in the wild. Keep your eyes on the reservoir banks and scrubland where crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer, and the occasional leopard also roam.
Bring your binoculars: the park shelters a rich mix of endemic and migratory birds, and its open terrain makes for excellent sightings. Butterfly enthusiasts will find plenty to stop for too. Your jeep holds a maximum of six passengers, keeping the experience genuinely private. Complimentary pickup and drop-off is included for any location within 5 km of the park gate, along with a bottle of water per person. Park entrance fees are paid separately in cash on arrival.
