A retelling of the old chase story in which a gingerbread man springs from the oven and runs, prepared for young readers in English by Priyangwada Perera. The telling is kept simple and the pages carry colour illustrations throughout.
It belongs to a series of fairy tale titles that M. D. Gunasena has put together for children in Sri Lanka, bringing the familiar stories into short, plainly told versions with pictures on every page. The approach across the series is the same: a well-known tale, straightforward language, and illustration doing a good deal of the work.
M. D. Gunasena & Co. is a Colombo publishing house with a long association with schoolbooks and children's reading in Sinhala and English, and this title sits in that part of its list.
Suitable for children beginning to read on their own, and for reading aloud to those who are not there yet. For families abroad who want their children reading English storybooks published at home, or for anyone building a shelf of Sri Lankan children's books, it is an easy one to start with.
