A collection of short stories in Sinhala by Sarath Wijesooriya, and the book with which he entered the field as a writer of short fiction.
The stories gathered here were written when Wijesooriya was a young man. What carries them, according to his publisher, is the sharpness of his observation — of life, and of the society around him — which runs through each piece.
The title story describes a young man who leaves his village for the city to take up higher education, and the violence he is subjected to under ragging. Wijesooriya wrote it from practical experience of that period, and set down plainly both the cruelty of the practice and its thoughtlessness. The story provoked debate when it appeared.
The collection drew the attention of readers and critics alike. Taken together, the stories hold up certain conditions of Sri Lankan society as they stood at one particular moment.
