The emphasis is on Italian words in common use — the vocabulary of ordinary speech and daily dealings rather than specialised or literary terms. Lalith Samarasinghe draws on long personal experience of Italy in choosing what to include, and that experience shows in the kind of words gathered here.
It is addressed in the first place to Sri Lankans living and working in Italy, who need the language for work, for household matters and for getting through the business of settling in a country where Sinhala is of no help. It serves equally anyone in Sri Lanka taking up Italian out of interest, since the English column gives a second route into each entry for readers more confident in English than in either of the other two languages.
