Sethsuwa Pranajeewa is a thick herbal liquid, very dark brown to almost black, with a strong bitter-sweet smell. It is made by Sethsuwa Ayurveda Hospital at 258/19 Vihara Mawatha, Batalanda, Makola South, and the carton is marked "Product of Sri Lanka". The bottle and carton are printed in Sinhala, Tamil and English, and are stamped with a manufacturing date and a batch number. The pack carries a company registration number and a hospital registration number rather than a product medicine licence.
The maker describes it as a formula of around 200 herbs, prepared to a recipe inherited within the family by a specialised method and then matured for four and a half months. Beyond that description, very little is documented. The pack prints no ingredient list and no dosage, and the maker's own website gives neither. The packaging describes it being taken internally and also applied externally to the skin, but without stating how much, how often or for how long. Anyone intending to use it should therefore ask a qualified practitioner of Ayurvedic practice how much to take, rather than guessing.
About the claims on the packaging. The packaging, and the maker's own website, make far-reaching claims about serious illness, including claims of relief, control and lasting cure. Lakpura does not repeat those claims, because they are not supported by reliable evidence, and no one should delay, replace or stop treatment prescribed by a doctor on the strength of them. The pack also states that the product is registered with the United States food regulator. That wording is misleading. The US Food and Drug Administration does not approve, endorse or certify herbal supplements. A company that ships food products to the United States is simply required to register its facility, which is an administrative formality and says nothing at all about whether a product works or is safe.
Before you use it. If you are being treated for any serious condition, talk to your doctor before taking this at all, and continue the treatment you have been prescribed. Do not use it as a reason to postpone seeing a doctor about symptoms that worry you. Because no dose is printed anywhere, ask an Ayurvedic practitioner what amount is appropriate for you. Avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and do not give it to children unless a doctor agrees. Stop using it and seek medical advice if you have any reaction to it, whether taken internally or applied to the skin.
